Social Stigmas: Let's Address Them.
It is important to recognize and address the societal attitudes and stigmas that can create barriers for individuals with physical disabilities in the gym. While physical activity is essential for maintaining physical and mental health, many individuals with disabilities may feel excluded or discouraged from participating in fitness activities due to societal attitudes and stigmas. One common misconception is that individuals with disabilities cannot engage in physical activity or should not be in the gym.
“If we have a limitation, why to show up at all, right?”
This attitude is harmful and prevents individuals with disabilities from accessing the health benefits of exercise. In reality, many people with disabilities are able to participate in physical activity with modifications or adaptations, and there are a variety of accessible gym equipment and facilities available that can make this possible.
Another common stigma is that individuals with disabilities should only engage in "specialized" or segregated fitness programs rather than participate in mainstream fitness activities.
Why not have classes or programs offered that are accessible to all? Modifications for workouts?
This attitude can contribute to feelings of exclusion and limit opportunities for individuals with disabilities to socialize and engage with others in the gym. Creating inclusive and accessible gym environments can benefit everyone and promote a sense of community and belonging.
When I first got into fitness, I was unsure if I could attend the fitness classes my sister and mom were because I had specific limitations. However, I went in, I showed up. I was able to do the exercises I was able to do. When I could not do others, I was directed to modification. If only fitness classes were directed and organized that way, we could show they can be inclusive if we put in the work.
In addition to these attitudes, individuals with disabilities face practical barriers to accessing the gym, such as inaccessible facilities or lack of accessible equipment. This can create further feelings of exclusion and frustration. It is important for gyms and fitness centers to make accommodations and modifications to ensure that individuals with disabilities can participate in physical activity safely and comfortably.
By working together to create inclusive and accessible fitness environments, we can promote physical and mental health for everyone, regardless of ability.
